One thing I did do while the engine was out was shorten the length of the cables to the coil overs as they were unnecessarily long. I thought I had perhaps wired them incorrectly but I buzzed all the cables out and they were okay. I checked the plugs and they were coated in carbon which means too rich. I have now disconnected the MAF and directly it runs much better, not perfect but at least it stops stalling. Still the idle is quite erratic and the new vent valve (can't remember the name of it but it was replaced when installing the SC) is moving in and out continuously.
The only thing I may have done differently this time is torque everything to the exact specification whereas the first time I put the engine in I didn't have a decent torque wrench!
Any ideas why it's running like this would be greatly appreciated.....
..... Thanks for the help Dave, James and Taffy.
I have tried a few things and have a few things left including replacing lambda. I will also change the MAF as I bought a cheap aftermarket one before. This is what it sounds so far .....
Once the shape is correct I'll cut it out from aluminium sheet. The idea is it will fit snugly up against the bonnet. All the nice cold air should go straight to the air filter!
Hey Steve,
ReplyDeleteI had a similar problem when i restarted my engine (M44) after changing the clutch (to a 328 setup actually). I actually ended up with a crapped out EWS system in the end, but to get it going:
Clean the MAF with MAF cleaner
Clean the spark plugs
Check for vaccum leaks (get some aerostart and spray it around the hoses, if revs jump you have a leak).
On restart the engines need to relearn for abit, so intially they do run like crap in default mode.
Next on my list will be a new idle control valve (mine jammed up at one stage), replace MAF and a new O2 sensor (get a bosch/BMW one, not a cheap universal one as they dont seem to work with the ECU even though noted as correct)
I getting getting a pending error on the MAF.
Cheers,
Taffy
Hi Taffy,
ReplyDeletethanks for the information, it's given me hope. I was getting worried that I had done something bad during the upgrade. I shall try for leaks tomorrow and also give the MAF a clean. I replaced the throttle valve switch last year but not the Idle regulating valve - should I replace it too? The MAF is not OEM but an after market I found on ebay. It was running "ok" with it before I took the engine out. I haven't replaced the lambda sensor, I'll do that. It will mean that I have replaced just about every sensor, in fact every sensor!
I'll be back.
Cheers
Steve
Hey Steve,
ReplyDeleteIdle control wont cause you issues like this. Would only run with throttle partially open.
You can check the o2 sensor with a volt meter or a odb2 scanner easily enough. 0-1V range and vary as it runs. 0.3~0.7 kind of stuff.
The other 2 sensors it could is cam position which is on the front and the crank angle sensor just under the starter motor.
I replaced my Cam pos sensor (just grabbed one off a wrecker as i didnt know if it was bad or not) and that got rid of some issues. No error code for it when mine was playing up.
Basically the cam position sensor controls fuel injection and crank controls spark, both give readings into the DME.
Too bad your not in melb, aus else you could borrow mine to test so i just finish the car and stopping doing laps of the block!
I am not getting speed signal to odb2 scanner, you ever have that problem?
cheers,
Taffy
Hi Taffy, I changed CAN and CAM sensors last year. I used start gas over the weekend and noticed a leak so I loosened the inlet manifold, removed the SC bracket and re-torqued. No leaks now. Will connect the steering and take her for a spin in the next few days.
ReplyDeleteCheers
Steve
Hi Taffy,
DeleteI thought I answered your speed signal missing from odb, did I? I solved it by connecting the diff speed to the ecu. I have it in my blog somewhere. The only problem is it's not accurate, about a quarter of what it should be. I added an abs sensor but not wired it in yet. That may give the correct speed.
Car is running really well now, touch wood!
Cheers for now
Steve
