Ready to start rebuild

Hi again,
I collected the head and block today from a nice company close by called Broms och Toppservice (Brakes &  head). The valves were pressure tested and passed and the block was honed. Both head and block were then planed and cleaned and look great!
Looks new - almost

Have to put back the oil spray nozzles.
The nozzle and bolt have holes in them for the oil to be sprayed onto the underside of the cylinders, I need to double check whether I need to get the holes lined up but I don't think so as there is a space between so the oil can circulate and besides it would be a pretty bad design if it had to be!
Checking bearing shells for part numbers

I ordered all the parts from the local BMW dealer. I decided when it comes to engine components to go for original parts. It all came to a hefty amount so I'm hoping I can get it all back together without screwing up.

  1. Ouch, just read about your fun there Steve. Hope the rebuild goes well. Next winter thinking of getting a 2nd engine and build up so i dont need to keep an oil pan under the car at all times!

    Cheers,
    Taffy

    1. Hi Taffy, yes it was all a little unexpected but as you say it's good fun. I'm picking up most of the parts tonight :-) Is there a big market there for second hand engines? Here it's almost non-existant.

      Cheers
      Steve

  2. In Aus they are fairly common, A$500 will get another M44 on ebay. If you find someone wrecking the car possibly even cheaper, E36s are worth nothing here. E30 values are climbing and E46 are still a little high.
Deciding what to do next, more upgrades or another build. Have a growing collection of parts for another build but might hold off that till winter and just do clubby upgrades/fixes. Got a rear end vibration that just wont go away, bearings will get replaced next.

I gave in and added an aeroscreen for the last drive with some lotus guys, meant i could wear a hat and glasses and not a helmet the whole way but now need to add doors to reduce the buffeting from the sides.

    Thanks,

    1. Great pictures, they really have a good community for 7 type cars, but the weather reminded me of the UK!

I could have bought an old engine for about a third of what I have paid in parts, honing and tuning. But I keep telling myself that an old engine would probably also have come with problems. At least if this goes back together okay it'll be reconditioned, tolerate the SC and hopefully last a long time.

Fantastic to be able to go out driving without a helmet, doors are great for motorway driving and even the Caterham wind deflectors that I have reduce buffeting.

      Cheers for now
      Steve
